Myself Bryce and Zenntenn have decided to meet up for the Festival of Speed car show in Vinoy Park on February 26th.
This is the third year for the show and the cars it attracts are pretty impressive. The first year they had five Enzos on hand as well as a 959 and a street going Mercedes CLK-GTR.
Not to mention cars both new and old from domestic to exotic and racing.
You can read more about it here www.festivalsofspeed.com
It starts at 10 am and you should plan on spending at least two hours if you want to see all of the cars and more if you want to see any in detail.
We will plan on lunch at one of the local places.
Who's in?

I'm in already  I am really looking forward to it. Have you figured out where we can meet up ?

I wish I could go.
St. Pete's downtown waterfront is one of the best venues for outdoor activities. I remember fondly going to Shakepeare in the Park, the free radio station sponsored outdoors concerts, arts and crafts festivals, the International Folk Fair, etc. :(

Probably makes sense to meet downtown somehwere (Starbucks) and then go over to the show... either during or after we see the cars we could grab lunch.
But whatever works for the group is cool with me.

Will we have ample parking and be able to leave our cars there? Is it a long walk from the parking structure at BayWalk ?

Its a bit of a hike from Baywalk but unless you find on street parking (which can be had) there arent many central meeting places where parking is also available.
Obviously the earlier we go the easier it would be to find good street parking.
We could park where ever we find space and then meet in front of the Vinoy.
Does this mean I have to wash my car?
Just Bryce

It depends on if you are driving the car down or riding the bike for ease of parking :dunno: I also had the thought that if I arrive early enough in the morning I will be able to see the cars driving from the hanger to the park, might make for some good photo ops

Maybe we can meet at a parking garage and car pool from there. Isn't there parking at the show?

No, just on the street and a small lot that is behind the Vinoy.
I dont think it will be a problem at all, just that it wont be as simple as pulling inot a lot or garage and being right there.
When I said it would be a hike from Baywalk to the park I am speaking about no more than half a mile or so. So its not as bad as I may have made it sound.
I am just spoiled because I am used to being able to find close on street parking for most anything I do downtown.

I'll have to see what my brother wants to do, he really likes that kind of stuff, I don't want to go alone without him or he will be pissed. My parents arn't really into looking at that stuff, though, i'll see what I can plan.
*Edit* What do you guys want to eat? Seafood? American? Asian? What price range?

Half a miles not that big of a deal. As far as where we eat, I don't really care what's on the menu as long as it's not at some crappy chain joint. Some place cool, you know what I mean.

Hi,
Thanks, BmW745On19's, for the tip that there is such an event. All I need to know is the EXACT time and location where we meet. I'll come with my brother. I don't care about the restaurant though - feel free to decide..
I'll keep on checking this thread to see where and when we'll finally meet.
Thanks again!

I'm thinking LmtdSlip and or Bryce should come up with a location and time on Sunday morning. We all park in the general vicinity and then meet up at the designated location for the walk to the Fest. The event starts at 10am. I'm driving the farthest but I can still be there. If I"m running late I can just meet you in the event. I have Bryce's cell number so staying in touch won't be a problem. IMHO

Uh oh, I just thought of something, the car will be going to the shop on thursday and we will have a loaner given to us, on Saturday we are going to drive to the Outback open, I forgot what it was called the golf thing, since Cadillac gave me some free tickets to it via mail but I have to drive a Caddy to get it. I might be able to make it on Sunday but I'll make sure when I see my brother tomarrow.

Alfresco
501 5TH Ave NE
St Petersburg, FL 33701-2620
(727) 894-1000
The Scene
Perched above a pretty 10-foot waterfall that adjoins the Vinoy's lavish pool deck, Alfresco provides an inviting spot to hang when it's hot. It's also an attractive, casual alternative to the hotel's more formal dining rooms. The classy bar and comfy tables are lit by generous windows and skylights.
The Food
The emphasis is on fresh, local produce and seafood prepared with Caribbean spices and tropical flair. Start with a fruity Rum Runner or pineapple smoothie. The crab cake appetizer with black bean relish and Key lime tartar is excellent. The lemon pepper pasta with shrimp, clams and spicy tomato broth zings. Don't skip dessert--the rice pudding with cilantro sauce is dynamite.
This looked tempting and convenient for lunch :dunno:

I have eaten there once. Casual atmosphere. A bit more expensive due to it being in the Vinoy but a nice setting. There are many good places to eat downtown.
I have eaten at a lot of them so if you have questons Ill try and help.

I'm not all that picky, I just want a nice casual relaxed atmosphere. Since it's in the Vinoy, maybe it won't overwhelmingly busy. I also like that it's within walking distance.

OK, so how about meeting up at 11AM at the Northshore Pool parking lot?

We will also want to have a backup place as their is construction going on at the pool and I am not sure if this affects the parking. I dont think it does but just in case we could agree to park on Bayshore Drive NE. That is the street that fronts the water and leads directly to the Vinoy.

The thing is that is a very busy lot as people use it for a variety of purposes on weekends. Bike riders get there earely and are usually gone by 11. Dog walkers and parents taking kids to the pool and park are all day.
Depending on how big this event is it may even be closed.
Let's plan on that lot for the time being. Ill put in a call and see if the lot will be open or closed.

I was thinking about valeting my car at the hotel. I plan on getting up there somewhere between 9:30 and 10am. I don't think we'll be able to get spaces together but who knows. Let us know, if that parking lot will be open.
Edit: Great map !!
Edit: I assume they use the entire park area for the cars (both sides of Bayshore Drive)? I wonder if they open up the ball field for parking.
Have either of you attended this event before?

You can valet at the Vinoy hotel, it is about $13 as I recall.
It looks like the Northshore pool parking lot will be open so that is a good place to park and meet. There is a small new building by the dog runs where we could meet.
I went to this event two years ago and they only used Vinoy Park. They did not need or use Straub Park which is the one directly in front of the Vinoy.
Ill plan on being at the dog runs at 10AM. Ill probably be down there earlier so if anyone wants to hook up for a preview and/or a Starbucks let me know.
Who else is in?

Hmm, so I said to Bryce earlier via PM I had a committment...but that was before I realized it was on Sunday.
So it sounds interesting, but I have a couple questions:
- Would young Master Wingspan be appropriate to bring along (he's 10 and a gear-head)?
- Is the Sunday "show" free (I checked over the event site and could not quickly find out - not an issue just need to know what to expect)
- Anybody coming from the north Orlando/Oviedo area?

It is a fenced in area (for dogs to run free) that is located along 7th Avenue NE across the street from the tennis courts at the Vinoy Hotel. The entrance to the dog runs and one of the entrances to the pool parking lot is located at the intersection of 7th Aveneue NE and Bayshore Drive NE.
They recently built a small supplies/storage building at the entrance to the dog runs. I figured this would make a good landmark for us to meet up.

They were getting ready for tonights Yacht Hop at the Vinoy so there were about a half dozen very nice boats docked out front.
If the weather hold out this should be fun!

Good pics, to bad the battery didn't last and to bad we couldn't get a good front shot of the Maybach girl
If my camera had not died, I would have been in the back of that car with the curtains closed getting a quality bewb shot

So is it too early for us to plan on going to the night event next year? :dunno: I believe the "Hanger" party was Friday and yacht hopping was Saturday night.

The web site has the update info for this years event.
March 23 - 24th
Friday the 23rd is the only evening event this year.
Also it looks like they will be charging admission to see the cars on Saturday. based on the quality of the cars Id say it would be worth $5 or $10 to see them.

It is surprising to see that this is not a full weekend event. Only thing I can think of is that Vinoy Park is already booked on Sunday.:dunno:
The reception on Friday is $65 but it has a top shelf open bar. I would make sure I got my $65 worth of drinks. :drink:

This will only be the fourth year this has been in existence. I think they are still working out all of the bugs.
Car quality is excellent. marketing and promotion could use some help.
I think the biggest issue for a two day deal is how to secure the cars overnight.
If they intend to charge an admission fee then they will need to secure Vinoy park like they do for the other festivals and concerts down there. Fencing, cops, security and ticketing/admissions. All expensive propositions that would likely eat up a good part of the gate fee.
Either way Ill attend.
