Perhaps its the sending unit that has gone bad in the tank. I seem to recall seeing a write up about replacing the pump and it talking about the sending unit. Anyone else recall this at all?

That seems like a more likely culpret than the guage itself...but with an E36 you never know.

but if the sending unit was bad wouldnt that affect the light onhi slcuster for low fuel as well?? IMO if the sending unit was bad that would cause the light not to work as well. but i could be wrong on this

I had this problem on my 95 ti. The dealer couldn't find anything wrong, so I just lived with it and in a couple of days it started working again and never failed after that. I suspected moisture got into something and it finally dried out.

There is something strange in the air. Just today, after filling up my tank, my fuel gage continued to show near empty (but not yet at the red light). As I drove to work (25 miles) the gage slooooowly recovered to show over half full when I parked. After work the gage showed completely full. I don't get it but maybe the recovery theory will work for you.

Also, my Range reading on the computer remained stuck at 84 miles (reason I bought gas in first place). According to owner's manual the Range should reset on fill up (perhaps f---d up gage is cause?).
