how much performance can you lose with a cracked head. Is it noticable

noticeable, uh....yeah.

how about the white smoke pouring out of your tailpipe for starters? a cracked head is expensive to fix. Do that before your whole engine seizes.

I second that. You may want to fix that soon...very soon.

well i don't have white smoke coming out. But i have overheated the car and driven it numerous times. Everyone else says that theirs will just crack the first time it overheats. What are the symptomns if my headgasket is blown. Would that decrease performance

take a look at your oil, If you see a white milky crap then my friend you have blown your head gasket. I wouldnt mess around with that to much, i would get it fixed ASAP

I just had my headgasket changed and my head was cracked, i had it welded and machined, all the seals were changed and its still pouring out white smoke.I'm not sure if the mechanic ever changed the oil, what do you think?it's idleing horribly as well, once its over 2k its just like normal and the smoke disapears.

Id say you still have a big problem with your head.

Check your oil and then your coolant

I'm going to flush out the current oil water mixture on monday morning with new oil and seafaom to absorb the moisture and then put new oil and see if it gets saturated again with water, if it does my mechanic will be recieving no money. I hope its just residual water though as I absolutely love this car.

I had milky looking oil up to the 2nd oil change after my headgasket job. It took a while to get all that junk out. I flushed it with oil system cleaner the 2nd time. 5k miles later..and another oil change later..nice and clean still.

i flushed the system just like I planed and everything seems to be just fine, no more smoke and no more milk.Thank god for small miracles! My car is still overheating though, how can i tell if i need a new fan clutch???Ive already changed the water pump and thermostat and the radiator, this is getting ridiculous.the car runs fine and it gets to normal operating temperature just like it should,it stays there for awile and then starts to jump over the line.Any thoughts????

Have you purged the air out of the system?

Are you loosing coolant or is the car just overheating.

If you arnt loosing coolant, I would suggest a cooling system problem. Maybe a blockage or theromstat issue.

Also, it wouldnt hurt for you to check the coolant level and make sure the system has been correctly purged (all air removed).

If you are loosing coolant, check all hoses, radiator and water pump. If there not leaking, I would take the car back to the place that just fixed it and tell them the to do it again, properly.

Happy and safe Bimmering.

it actually is leaking a few drops from where the resevoir and radiator meet, I have read that this is a common problem with these radiators. Is there anything i can do besides getting a new radiator.I have purged the system but the problem is that since there is a leak more air is just introduced. As far as taking it back to the place that just fixed it, i don't think Ill be doing any more business with them, and Ive already informed them that since they did not do all the work that i was quoted for they will only be recieving the money for the parts and the labour on the head gasket. it saves me a total of $400 bucks, which I'm about to spend on a radiator and fan clutch anyways. Oh well
