*Spoiler*

Road and Track said the M6 feels more connected to the road and to get it over the M5 if you dont need the space. And vice versa for the M5. Numbers are basically the same however, so it's really a case of personal preference.

One number is not basically the same, namely the sales price. M5 at about $90k vs M6 at about $110k. Yeah, I know, if you can afford an M....blah, blah. Still, is it worth $20k (or more considering dealer asking price over MSRP) for a very slight edge over the M5? Only if you love the styling and looks of the 6 more than the 5.

I think they are making less M6's than M5's, still, that doesn't really justify the price difference. What I think does though is that a standard 650i price vs 550i price, ~$15k.

Good point regarding the price of a 650 over a 550. Personally I think that's a little much spearation as well, but BMW has marketing experts who know where that sweet spot is on the price point. Still, I'd go with the M5 since the styling of the 6'er is nice but not really any more appealing to me than the 5'er, so not worth a premium to me personally.

Id Take The 5 All Day Long.... The Room Is There, (the Power Is There), You Can Get One With A (sunroof), Its Important To Me!
Overall, More Practical And Incidentally, Fun!

Regarding the 550 vs 650, I'd buy the 650 just because not many people have one, where as many people have a 550, or similar 5-series. M5 vs M6 though, I'm still shooting for the M6, same reason as the 650.

M5, easily, all day, twice on Sunday, and once before work the next day. The 6-series does nothing for me. *shrug*

I've heard of people's personal experience and they say that the M6 sounds like it is actually faster, like the exhaust is racier and what not.

I think they're both beautiful cars but if I had the choice, I think I'd go with the M6. But that could be because I am a coupe lover.

both have the same engine, both are fast as hell, both are 6 speed and would b one great match, but depends on what u want if u want a family sedan that is fast the M5 but if u want a sport car the M6 in my case in PR we have 4 M5's E60 but only one M6 so I would pic the M6

A 400 hp M3 next year might be a good "compromise" at about $65K if the 5 and 6 are a little outside the budget :dunno:

The prestige factor of the M6 alone makes it worth the additional $35K.

I will admit, over time the 6 is growing on me more and more. It's intriguing, but the price gap is still hard for me to justify. I would still take the M5, but the M6 has closed the gap the more I've seen of it the last couple of weeks.

Take it from a guy who tested both back to back on BMW's track yesterday:

Both are incredible cars. But when it comes to performance on the track the M5 takes it. I was actually a bit disapointed with the M6. When compared to the M5 it doesn't corner as well and feels looser in the corners. Got some rear end slide with the M6 whereas with the M5 it was more direct. Now I know it's minor but the interior of the M6 definetly feels sporty, while luxurious at the same time. The M5s interior has just a bit less sport and more comfort to it. Personally, I'd take the M5 over the M6 anyday, especially considering the $15K price difference.

i'll take the M5 just because its slightly cheaper and the most important, it has 4 doors and 5 passengers capability. if i want a true sports car i'd go with the 06' Z06, 505hp/475lb fts with curb weight of 3,000lbs. not to mention a Z06 can take a M6 to school in any catagory w/o breaking a sweat, i can also save additional 40g's for gas for the next 5 yrs and i still have $$ left for the real estate taxes on my house.

Since neither the M5 or M6 are everyday driver's cars (10MPG  ) most will be garage queens. If I were to buy one, I would go with the M6 just because there is nothing on the road that looks like it (other than a 650). The M5 is among over 100,000 5 series that get sold every year. BMW builds approx. 9,000 6 series per year and only a few hundred so far this year are M6's.

My criteria would be different than C&D and perhaps you too...

So, I take the M6. Why?

Because I prefer a coupe over a sedan right now.:D

M6 for me too! Right now that is my screen saver until I have one in my garage.

M5..... I'm of the M6 styling dissappoints in a ford thunderbird kind of way. The body is too long almost for just 2 doors it seems IMO.

I agree that the M6 would be great to have for it is so rare. But the M5 having 4 doors is big in my mind. I much prefer sedans. Same engine so which body style do you like the best? Me - M5

I would get the 550 over the 650 for the same reason, 4 door sedan and I like the body style better...... AND I can buy a ford thunderbird with the 20k savings )

At this point, it is very clear that both M5 and M6 are going to make proud owners out of anyone aside from personal preferences, especially after seeing and hearing reports from people who have driven both.

In my opinion, automobiles are just automobiles which are chunk of metals unless we have our experiences with them; and our experiences come from our perception of beauty, power, comfort etc.

While I have loved the styling of 6-Series/M6 and have had great time cruising around with my lovely wife in our 645 CiC, I am trying to find a way to get both M5 and M6 into my garage. :D

I have accomplished my first step now. As of yesterday, my order for the M6 is in the system!!

"I am looking forward to taking the delivery of our M6" would be a complete understatement to say the least!! :D

Now I have got to figure out the way to get the rest of my wish list done......and having a great time while doing it!! :D

I think you might be the only person in the country to have an m5 and m6 if you are able to swing it. God Bless You.

I had both the E60 M5 and now have the E63 M6. I loved my experience with M5 ( had it 6 months)...But there is significant difference between the 2. Not so much in acceleration ( although I recently race E60 M5 with my M6 on a well know NYC bridge ,approx 1/2 mile long) and beat it my a good 10 car lengths. The difference is in the stabilty and handing. It feels much tighter and quicker to accelerate than the M5. Dont get me wrong the m5 is definitely sick but im a coupe guy and honestly the price diference was not the 20k everyone says. After all the options my M5 came out to 99k and my M6 was 108k both fully loaded. Im a coupe guy...would love to get the Alpina B7 if I want sedan...

What are you people talking about? Slight differences? The M6 is lighter, faster, lower center of gravity, handles better! Those are some major differences. If you dont believe me, go on youtube.com and search for videos called M5 vs. M6 and you will see for yourself. Those are all facts! Now for my opinion, the M6 is head and shoulders above the M5 in terms of styling and road presence.

I'd go for the M5, my reason being that four door sedan just shouldn't be that damn fast! Not sure if I'd consider it a sleeper, but that's one wicked four door. I'm under 30 with no kids and a 745i is what I have now, coupes just never did it for me. I envy all of you that actually need to make that choice versus hypothetically making that choice!

Caveat: I am an owner of a 2003 540i 6-speed and have driven the e39 m5.
I am of the opinion that both are awesome cars, and I love the look of the m6. However, I don't think neither qualifies as a sports car. For M6 kind of money, I would get a 997 GT3. So I think the M5 takes this one as the most bonkers production sedan.
I have to say, though, that after getting out on the track and trying out a few cars, I think Cayman will be my next car - mondo engines are great, but there is just no fooling physics in the turns. I now think the e46 M3 is too heavy :).

I never understood the styling of the new 5 series ...quite frankly I found them ugly. No offense intended ...itst just a matter of personal taste. so if bought a 2007 M6 and have no regrets: Black, black, all options and windows tinted....it looks sinister....and is so much fun to drive.
