I was hanging out with a friend today and she asked me if my car was a '7 series coupe'. Funny thing is, it made me think and it kind of does look like a two door seven.

Isn't the 6 Series based on part of the 7 Series? I thought I read that somewhere on BMW. I will try to find it.
Take a look at the concept Z9 and you will see many derivitives in the 7 and 6.
Eitherway it's all good and it was a compliement non-the-less.

My friend told me they wanted something like the 850, but more affordable.

I'll bet u read that in some car magazine:dunno:
You must have missed the three hour special on the 6er "Birth of a Sports car". And the detailed (30+ pages) in 2003 BMW released on the 6er, plus other more informed sources. Definately a design from the ground up. It is not a 5 and not a 7. It shares components from both. I see folks say same engine as 5. But is that not the same engine as 750? And what was that derived from, an X5 engine. Did it not start life with the 4.4L (745/645/545) engine from the 7 as well? So is it 5 or 7. Neither. External shape started with Z9 concept and refined from there. Almost every interior and exterior shape is new and unique to the 6er. Even materials, assembly and build techniques were specific to this car. BMW was further advanced in its implementation of the MOST bus so it more closely resembles the 5 in electronics just out the door a year earlier. Since the 7 will be next redesign look for it to lead the way for BMWs next incremental electronics change. BMW will also use or reuse parts from any model into a new model to help defry costs for R&D or logistics reasons. Any similarities to any of its kin are due to designer bias and not taking from one car or another.

I think its actually a perceptive comment. The 6 and 7 were both designed by Van Hooydonk who also did the Z9 concept car that introduced the visual cues that would later be seen on the 6 and 7. Look at the shape of hte 6ers headlights, the cutline on the side, the trunk-- all very similar to the 7. So, for peopel who don't eat and breathe BMWs, I think its not so off-base.
sure but isn't the basic chassis the same as the 5. just as the x5 is based on the 5 chassis. :dunno: car co's do this all the time.
honda:
prelude, accord, oddyssy, old vigor... same chassis
civic and integra ... same chassis
and the engine argument doesn't work.... ex. the 3.0L engine is used in the 130i, 330i, 530i .... and so on.
not one of the body sheet metal and most interior pieces are shared between the e46 coupe and sedan yet they both share the same chassis. so the external shape argument work either. case and point the prelude and oddyssey.
there are 2 or so years apart between the 5 design and the 6 design so the 6 could be very well using some new techniques. bmw does this w/ low volume cars... the trickle down thing you know... reagan stuff.

The other differentiating fact is that all the body panels on the 6 are not made from steel. Most are aluminium and then there are thermo-plastics (not sure what that really means). The little spoiler on the boot's edge is made in that special plastic material because BMW cannot bend aluminium into the right required shape.
Correct me if I'm wrong: isn't the E60 5 series made out of steel entirely? Or are there aluminium composites too?

the 6er is using the same technology as the roof of the e46 m3 csl.
thermoplastic panels, similar to the idea of what saturn had been using on their dent resistent door panels.

You may be inviting BMW to consider cutting the top off of some of the 7 series sitting around on lots unsold. What a novelty that would be crusing down the boulvard in a 7 conv.
It has been proven to a sure babe magnet :loco:

If you think about it, the front of the 6 looks like a Z4 and the back looks like the 7 (the trunk).

I think the 6 looks more like a big Pontiac GTO or Grand Am than a 7 or 5?

I can relate, when I first got the car EVERYONE stopped what they were doing and stared at the car, but now a days, all I see is black people with good taste stop and stare with their mouth wide open then they yell "Thats a nice ride!" And I'm like "Thanks" and give them the thumbs up. Back in 2002 when the car first came out, 19's were big wheels and I used to kid around that the black dudes who stared at the car were like "Damn! That white boy is ridin' on 19's!":p Thus, thats how my name came to be.

Haven't noticed anyone of any race in particular that likes this car, but the reaction is always either one of admiration or jealousy coupled with stupid remarks. There is no middle ground.
