I live in upstate NY and it snows a lot here. I have got the all weather wheels and I am really not happy with them. The car skids and there is no traction at all eventho the wheels are a year old.. anyone else with that problem? how much of a difference would snow wheels make? are they worth it?

What speeds are you driving? Having a SAV, SUV, or truck doesn't make the vehicle invincible. The key is traction the tyres are able to achieve. Traction contol only aids in keeping the car under control until the traction from the tyre is returned.
Are snows worth it? Every Penny my friend. Snow will grip like no all-season will ever accomplish.

There is substitute for "slowing down on ice or snow"

This has been discussed a million times before. I have winter tires on my X3 and grip is excellent. If the winters are harsh in your area I would definitely consider it. Be warned in the stock size they're not cheap though.
However, up where I am it's 100% worth it because of the snow/freezing rain and other crap we get all the time in winter. To me, I know that my winter tires have saved my butt a number of times. I'd happily buy them again.

Have you turned off the DSC instead?
If you have the DSC light on, it means it is OFF.
I have all season tires with my X3, the winter here in canada should be more harsh than NYC. I am doing fine. I just drove through a snowstorm @ steady 80km/hr with no single problem.

After many tries to get an explanation about all season tires versus snow tires in winter driving conditions it was plain and sinple. All season tires adjust to the temperature of the road and are not expected to be as good as snow tires in snow and ice. Good luck

I know what you mean, and yes snow tires will make a difference. I think the X3 won't ever get stuck in deep snow, but cornering in snow is a different matter. I suggest refraining from accelerating while turning, slowing down, and getting snow tires if you can.
Even after the snow's over, there's often piles of slush left on the corners where people turn. With the way I drive, that keeps DSC busy enough :p
