Has anyone had their engine noises diagnosed / repaired ? If so what was the cause ? The one I'm familiar with seems kinda noisey for a high dollar hydraulic liftered engine.

I had a similar problem on my '00 M5. It took the dealer's senior mechanic a couple of visits to find it. It was something with the air intake or gas mixture, I can't remamber what. BMW probably has some sort of memo out on the subject. With that engine I would suggest the dealer handle it and get a factory rep to see it if necessary. After they fixed it, it was a lot quieter. The ticking noise is normal. A loud noise that lasts about one minute after starting from cold requires a different special fix, but the engine doesn't suffer if you don't fix that one. The M5 engine is designed to be louder than the new 4.8L in my 650, or the 4.4L was in my 540.
There is a fix for a "noisy VANOS" issue. Not sure if it's a warranty item or not.

Try calling my dealer and speak to Rich Brooks or Mitch, one or the other can probably tell you what they did to my car. Try to avoid the service manager, John. It's A&L Motors in Monreoville, Pa., a suburb a Pittsburgh. The number is 412-373-6071.
