I'm just looking for some opinions, I know this is a much covered topic lately, but....
I'm planning on doing a custom CAI within the next couple weeks. I'm about to order a cone filter, but I can't decide which filter to order. Does anyone have any experience with these filters, or....which one would you get?

The one that will fit your car without any modification. I think number #2 looks okey.

its kinda a toss up beyween the two....but i would go with the first one because its not only cheaper but its smaller and woulf fit the relatively small space you have to work with
if your using 3 inch pvc or similer pipe remember that the outside diameter of the pipe is 3 and 1/2 inches so your flange on your filter has to be 3 and 1/2 inches too cuz your not gonna be able to streth it a half inch, keep that in mind k and n does make a few filters with 3 and 1/2 inch flanges

I'd do the skinnier one, not the fatter one...It looks better, and may fit more easily. All up to you though; it also depends on how you are going to make your CAI

For my custom CAI I used one that looks like the first one that is pictured. Remember that you need a filter to fit the outside pipe diameter as previously stated. For my CAI I used a 3" INSIDE diameter ABS plastic pipe and used a 3.5" INLET DIAMETER K&N filter, almost exactly like the first one. My filter was $40 and I believe the number was like RU-550 or something like that. Check out K&N's website and you can get any size filter they make.

Well, I just bought the second one, and then I came on here and saw that people told me to go with the first one. Oh well, according to the measurements I took the second one will fit fine, it will just be bulkier in there. I don't plan on making one that goes down as far as yours Ronnaferd, I think it will be easier to make one that looks just like McMeinerbury's setup. I found a link to a good DIY Article that I had never noticed on bimmerdiy.com before. If anyone else is looking to do this, http://home.comcast.net/~matthew.c.smith/mods/cais/index.htm has a great description and an awesome looking final product.

Cool site. Aluminum looks pretty spiffy!

My only problem with the aluminum is that being a metal, I don't know how functional it will be as a heat shield. All metals conduct heat very well, aluminum especially. I have all the tools I need to make the heat shield out of aluminum, so I was thinking about some sort of insulation if the aluminum does in fact conduct too much heat, defeating the purpose of CAI. What would be a good insulator to use?
