I just called the dealers and they told me if i didnt have a specific problem with my 98' 323IS tranny than i didnt need to ever have the fluid change since the Electronic systems last the life of the engine? To me this is a miricale a tranny that never needs its fluid changed!? Why doesn't every car manufacturer put this into their transmissions?!

First, it is called Steptronic.

Second, search this forum for the followng two words to have your question answered.

"steptronic" and "lifetime"

Nothing last forever.

Whenever car manufacturers make claims like "Lasts a Lifetime" they always specify what kind of mileage they consider a reasonable usable lifetime. It's always there in the fine print somewhere. Could be 100k or 150k or maybe more.

How long the fluid in YOUR tranny lasts depends mainly on your driving style. Everytime the fluid heat cycles it breaks down a little bit. It's true that you really don't need to change it unless you're having problems.

The stuff lasts a long time but certainly not forever.

thats more what im talking about berzerkas i figured it was something like that cuz in fact nothing lasts forever but yea im looking at 120k on my 98 and i really try to baby it (not sure about its previous owner) so ill make up for what ever abuse she has endured in the past.

But what turned me on to a transmission fluid changed other than starting my own Log on this car is that when im in park and select to go into another gear the car will give me a "pop" almost as if is hopping into gear?! IT MIGHT BE THE SUSPENSION OR IT MIGHT BE A MOTOR MOUNT IM NOT SURE....MAYBE YOU CAN enlighten me on that?
