I've had my 2002 mini for 5 months now, and have had to take it in for two things:

1) Broken shift cable linkage (recall has been issued)
2) Broken passenger side window regulator (drive motor)

It's a 100% new design and I have to say I've had less problems than the last 100% new design car I've bought (actually a minivan).

I can also say that MiniUSA is quite concerned with the service efforts of the dealers. They had called me asking how my first service trip went and I said great with one exception... they'd changed my license plate covers without asking first (from a different dealer's cover to theirs). I said that didn't really sit well with me. I had a call from the dealer the next day offering to replace the plate covers with my choice of mini custom covers. I can't say I've experienced that type of corperate nor dealer reaction in regards to any vehicle I've ever owned.

We've had our Cooper S for 3 months now... here's the problems we've had:

1) Stereo quit responding to the buttons on the head unit the first day we had it. We had been listening to a CD, parked the car, and when we came back, the CD didn't start playing right away. None of the buttons on the head unit would do anything -- it just seemed jammed. But the steering wheel buttons still worked - let us change it to radio, switch to the preset stations and change the volume. We took it back to the dealer for them to try fixing it, but when they started the car back up to take it down to the service bay, it mysteriously started working again. No problems since, but the dealer said they'd replace the head unit if it happened again.

2) During the first week we had it, my girlfriend was running an errand and the car completely died after she shifted into 2nd gear. She was able to get it restarted, and it hasn't done this since. The only sign of the problem was that the OBC settings and the trip odomoter had all reset.

3) About a month ago, we noticed that the left tailpipe's chrome surround had fallen off. Dealer replaced under warranty.

4) We're having the cold start problem... takes up to 3 tries to get it started in the mornings. There's aparently a software fix for this, but our dealer won't be able to install until December (to get it fixed before then, the ECU has to be shipped to NJ).

Other than that, no problems.

I have had the same cold start problem. It ususally takes two tries to start it.

I think it may have the Power Steering fan problem as described in a couple of threads on mini2.com

The roadside assistance people are coming now to take my car to Crevier (the dealer from whom I bought it, and they just happen to be right down the road from here:) )

I'll keep everyone posted with diagnosis, etc.
(By the way, my car never got to redline -- thankfully I noticed it before it got over the "3/4" mark and I never let it get past that.)

Taking the Mini in tomorrow to have them look at why the driver's side inside door handle is not opening the door anymore.
