I love the manual because I feel that I have more control of the car with it at any speeds.
I especially loved the manual feel when I down shift from 5th to 3rd when passing other cars on highway/ freeways on my mustang GT back in the day. I also loved it when I downshift to take sharp corners.. Its a wonderful sporty feeling.

With that said, I have never experienced Steptronics or other auto/manual transmissions so I really can't compare. What do you guys think?

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the SMG on my '05 545i but the GGT on the '07 550i forced me into the better MPGs of the steptronic. No GGT on the '07 550i = SMG for me.

Steptronic is an automatic so for someone who really wants to row their own gears or have instaneous downshifts when driving quickly, steptronic won't cut it. Manual or SMG is the only way to go for the enthusiast's taste. The great part of SMG, is keeping both hands on the wheel during fast driving (say windy roads). It makes you feel more secure and in control.

Err... I guess the writer failed to do much of a research b/c if he did he would have known that the M5/M6 will have a 6-speed available soon.

I seriously doubt the end of the 6-speed is anywhere near.

I doubt BMW will completely get rid of the manual.

MTs are way too much fun to drive, it's a must for sports cars/enthusiasts
