I hit 10,000 miles today. I've only had the car for 6 months. This is the highest amount of mileage i have put on a car in that period of time. I was driving in the Oaks in Calabasas...looking at some land with some friends(thoughts on that area Mal?) when i hit the 10k mark. I was expecting some type of congratulatory message from my Nav voice.

If it didn't have such unhappy memories for me I'd buy the 16 acres across Mulholland Highway from Calabasas High School and build a little ranch in there. Years ago the now ex and I looked at the Wagon Wheel Ranch, which I think is that property. We almost bought it although Randolph C. Scott's huge walk-in swimming pool alone was going to cost $500,000 to return to its original condition. The ranch was being used by shall we say "exotic movie makers."

I'd buy it and build a nice house and some barns. You could probably also put in a 6 car garage. I suspect some developer will eventually buy it and try to put in 4 soul-less houses. (Built in what I refer to as the "I'm rich!!!" architectural style.)

It's 2 miles from the freeway and shopping centers and yet completely secluded. I generally find that neighbors are best not seen or heard. But I do like the comforts of electricity, telephone, cable TV and modem

Of course, it all depends on your price range. I'd sell you my place, Eagle's Nest, which has a moat and drawbridge in front and a real running stream, but then I'd have nowhere to go. (And, you'd have no more excuses about missing a Woodland Hills/ Calabasas 6erfest.)

You'd be about the 20th 6er owner on Mulholland Highway if you moved in down the street.

By the way, congrats on the 10K.

Looks like mine will hit at about 12k miles according to the iDrive readout.

What does your idrive 'remaining miles for oil change' indicate?
Mine fluctuates, depending on how I drive. For example, I recently drove across the state and back (250 total miles). Pre trip - 1900 remaining miles per idrive; post trip - 2000  I have a total of 2600 miles on the car now but it is coming up on its first birth day (built date - june 05). If it goes under 1000, into the dealer it goes. I would recommend calling your dealer letting your SA know what your mileage is and whether they'll pick up the tab for oil change now. Why wouldn't they?

At 10,000 miles, it doesn't hurt to change now. I'm changing it tomorrow at only 1,600 miles! (Alright, that's an over kill). When iDrive prompts you, it is likely to be already quite low.

Are BMW engines built so well that it only requires an oil change once a year? While other car companies recommend oil changes every 3 months or 3K miles which ever comes first?

The oil change depends on the amount of gasoline burned. I am sure Cobradav knows down to the last ounce. Something like 775 gallons. Or at 12 months, whichever comes first. So, if you're feathering it, and get 19-20 MPG, you should go 15,500, unless you don't hit that in 12 months.

Most modern close tolerance engines, built with different materials and techniques, are now typically going 10,000 to 15,000 miles between oil changes. My Mercedes requires a change every 10,000 miles, or sooner if driven hard. I get it changed every 5000 miles because I don't drive it too much. My Dodge Dually with the 5.9L Cummins turbodiesel gets its oil changed every 3000 miles. The Durango every 4000-6000 miles.

So, the change in engine structure, materials and tolerances, coupled with incredibly better oil, all militates to longer times (and distances) between oil changes.

I was sorely tempted to change mine at 1500 miles, because of force of habit. But I restrained myself and didn't get it changed until last month at 7400 miles. I paid for that one. BMW will pay for the next.

BMW will pay for your first oil change after 12 months regardless of how few miles the car has gone.:)
