Hi everyone,
I am a little disappointed today.
I was all set to put my deposit down on my M3 but my dealer sold the allocation before I could do it. Now if I want one I will have to wait for the next lot of allocations which could mean a Jan. build with probably Feb. delivery and by that time the weather will be cold and damp.
From what I understand, the facelift will take place a month after that. This doesn't mean that much to me however, with the timing being so close, why shouldn't I just get the new facelifted M3?
Does anyone have any idea what the facelift on the M3 will look like. Is the facelift going to cause a price increase. Will there be a rush for the facelifted M3s.
I like the way the car looks as it is right now but I think it will be better to have the updated model as far as resale is concerned.
What should I do?

nobody knows what the facelift will look like.

Put your deposit down now to secure your spot in line, then decide next month when the allocations come out. Maybe we'll have more facelift info by then.

Will the M3 get a facelift at the same time the coupe does? I always thought there was a lag between coupe changes and M3 changes. :dunno:

How far are you from Kentucky? Im from the SF bay area, and I ordered my car from kentucky with almost no wait. let me know if you want my salesman's info.

No wait sounds great (no rhyme intended). What about the service though. Aren't you concerned about the cold shoulder treatment from the local dealer when you need service or warranty work?

No real problems with service. Dealerships MAKE money when they service your car, it shouldnt matter if you bought it there or not.

It shouldn't matter but I think it does. No loner cars, no priority, etc. Plus my dealer has been pretty good so far, it's just this allocation game that is frustrating. Thanks for the suggestion though, if things don't start happening, I may take you up on that. How do you like the SMG? Do you ever bump the shift paddles when you are making a turn that requires more than a little steering, like a U-turn for example?

Priority is based on the type of work you need done, not where you bought the car. Safety issues are usually first (car doesn't start, overheats, stalls, leaking fuel, coolant, oil, etc), then customer pay maintenance and repairs (tune-ups, brake jobs, etc.) and at the bottom of the list are regular warranty repairs (oil services, blown speakers, window regulators, blower resistors/final stage units, sunroofs, and the one they hate the most, RATTLES!!) This is why you occasionally see some people post on how their dealer gave them an estimated 3-4 week wait time to get a speaker or sticky pedal fixed.

As far as loaners go, I think it is safe to assume that the dealer will probably not give you a loaner if you didn't buy from them. Most dealers have that policy. Some don't give out loaners at all to anyone, some put restrictions on who is eligible (car has to be tied up for so many hours, etc) and others give loaners out to anyone, anytime. Call around and ask some service departments what their policies are.

I have talked to some dealers about service loaners and some offer rental cars like a Camry or a Corolla for others thier offer is this... nothing.

The dealer I am currently working with offers BMW loaner cars.

I bought my coupe at Casey, since they had one on the lot and Checkered Flag was giving me a horrible trade in on my old M3. But I did service the coupe at Checkered Flag before I moved to Philly and had no problem getting a loaner or a reasonable appointment scheduled. I did buy my old M3 there and my mother's Z3, so maybe that had some significance, but I wouldn't worry about buying elsewhere especially since you already have established a relationship with Checkered Flag.

I plan on sticking with Checkered Flag. I am quite sure they are being honest and fair with me. I don't think it is thier fault that someone beat me to the punch on the allocation. I just wish I could get my M3, like yesterday. I need to nail it down. The M3 is just too cool for school and I can't wait to drive one every day.

Lori,

If you want your car now, I would get it somewhere else. If you have a good relationship with your dealership, they will give you a loaner even if you purchased somewhere else. I got my M Roadster 3 years ago 200 miles from home at Cutter. I'll be making that trip again in a couple months to get my new M3.: -) I get service here in San Diego and they give me a loaner, although it's a Toyota.

Good Luck,
Bill

Bill,
Thanks for the advice but I think I will just wait for my car like most people do. My dealer is just great and they have been very helpful with my multiple test drives and special order questions. I wouldn't want to throw all that away just to get my car a month sooner. The only real question I have at this point is, should I order one now or wait for the facelift that is rumored to take place about a month after the approx. delivery date of the one I would order now.

That's cool. As for the facelift...It's always nice to have to newest thing but I'm not sure that I would like it. It would probably grow on me though. You really made me think about the chrome window trim. I kind of went back and forth on that for a while. I decided to stick with the black. I think that will look best with Imola. What color are you planning to get?

Bill

BTW -
Where are you from in VA. I grew up in Northern Va.

What type of hold did you have on the allocation? Any deposit? Did they call that they had an allocation? Did you tell them you would take it and hold it until you got there? Give them a credit card to hold it?

A lot depends on how the dealer works. Some dealers take deposits for a spot on the list. When your name come sup, you get the allocation and your deposit applies to the order.

Other dealers do not maintain lists. In that case they call prospective customers when allocations come out. In that case, as soon as you get a call, tell them you want it, and give them a credit card number to hold it until you can get there with a check.

If you told them you wanted it, and they told you they would hold it, and then sold it out from under you, I would be screaming.

Dealers lie. And if you don't stand up to them, they will walk all over you. Call a few other dealers and see what they have available. Then call your dealer back and tell them get an allocation or lose the sale. Amazing how they can work things out then. :)

Now my story, which is long.

In October 2001 I put a deposit down for a position on a list at a dealer. I was told that I was number 3 on the list and should expect to order no later than Jan 2002. No big deal. As time went on, I actually passed on an available allocation at another dealer. Trying to be "fair" to the first dealer.

In Feb, I was wondering what was up so one day I was inthe area and went in. I found out th eold sales manager had been fired. And that I was actually about 15 on the list, and would stillbe waiting today.

When I told them I was walking, they came back with an offer to give them some time to find an allocation for me. I went on a business trip for about two weeks. When I came back, sill no allocation. So I started calling around. First dealer, where I had passed on an allocation was up to 6 people and a 3 - 4 month wait.

Second dealer I called had an allocation available. I told them I would take it, and would be in that Sat with a check for a deposit. I gave them a credit card to hold the allocation.

I went in and ordered the car and picked it up 8 weeks and 2 days later.

Moral is, dealers will not be "fair" to you, so don't give them a chance to screw you up. Do what you have to do to get the car when you want it.

I get mine serviced at the dealer that had a wait when I called back, and they treat me very well, including loaner cars. I guess they want to sell me my next BMW. :)

My dealer called me with and said they had an allocation to be built in november. I told them that I wanted it and I asked them if I should give them a credit card over the phone and they said that they would put my name on it until I got there to sign the paper work no credit card was required. I asked them what week and if they had a production number and they said they would check and get back to me. Then they called back the next day and left a message that said they had "good news" so I called them and they told me that they had an allocation for a December build. I was like, " What the heck?, What happened to November"? So I told them that I would think about it for a night and when I called them back they told me that they just sold the allocation that night. BTW, I want to get a JB M3 with either black or red interior.

A verbal agreement for an allocation is just that, all verbal, and no proof. If you had left a deposit, that is another story. Let me know if you want my dealer info from Kentucky.

If you want to stick with that dealer, next time INSIST on a credit card deposit.

But I would start looking. That dealer is NOT treating you well.
