Guys,
I have a 1 month old 4.4 X5 with 1300 miles. It has been taken back to the shop 3 times now for excessive rattling from the rear hatch. They have adjusted it, and it works for a day or two but the rattles return. I am taking it back again for what will be the 4th time next week. Any ideas?

Make sure they adjust the 2 rubber stops on either side of the top hatch opening. They have a torx head that can be loosened and adjusted up or down. This adjusts how tightly the hatch sits against the lower panel. Too loose, and the hatch rattles. Too tight, and the hatch doesn't not close correctly and can flex. Hope this helps.

It might not be the hatch that's causing the rattles. Check the rear center arm rest as noises from it may make it sound like it's coming from the hatch...you can do this by simply pulling it out of the seatback into the arm rest position.

Got anything loose rattling around in the rear fender wells? Also, if you have a trailer hitch, is it torqued down correctly?

Idon't have a trailer hitch, and it is definitely not the arm rest. If they do not fix it this time I am going to ask for my money back. I spent damn near 70 on this thing and it rattles like 1970's japanese **** box, and it has been doing it since the day I got it.

After 3 years of rattling when I go over bumps or bridges, and 3 trips to the shop to fix it (unsuccessfully), I FINALLY fixed it myself (on my 2003 x5 4.4i).. this is how mine was resolved, I hope it helps. On the tailgate (bottom) there is a receiver ring for the locking mechanism (top part that closes down). there are 2 smooth plastic/rubber things on either side of the receiving ring (bottom)-- I put rubber tape/ insulation tape (found at any hardware store) on both of these smooth plastic/rubber things-- and, no rattle-- its worked for a while now, so I'm hoping its a permanent fix.

I had the same problem with my 03 X5. Drove me nuts! I almost traded it off on something else. Tried a lot of things. Adjusting the stops on the side and dry lubricant on the door gaskets helped for a couple days, then it came back. Finally I turned the side stops with torx heads all the way out and added a spacer under the rubber cap. I had to use double sticky tape on both sides of the spacer to keep the rubber in place. The spacer was made out of a metal 3/8 inch nut that I ground down a bit so it fit under the rubber cap resulting is a spacer about 1/4 inch thick. The X5 is now nice and quiet like it should be.
