95 BMW 318is

i recently purchased a 95 318is and so i am not yet accustomed to all its controls...there is a button near the gear...on one side of the button it says A and M on the other side...i am guessing it is for overdrive...
any help appreciated

M is "sport mode" and A is regular mode i believe....not 100%
