I was down in Winston-Salem, NC this weekend and decided to stop at Flow BMW/Mini to test drive a Mini. They only had a standard Cooper for demo. They sold their S demo car recently.
I was really impressed with the handling of the Cooper. I believe the demo car has the Sport Package with 17" wheels. Virtually no body roll at all. Took the car through 20 mph s-curves at 50 mph with no problems. The engine felt a little underpowered but I imagine the S would alleviate this problem. No torque steer to speak of, and surprisingly neutral in handling considering it's FWD with 60% (?) weight over the front wheels. Look and feel of interior is nice... only a few "hollow" feeling plastic panels in the back.
Definitely the best handling FWD car I've driven.
