Technically it is outside the recommended rim width range of the tire manufacturers and not recommended. However, BMW used used 235/40R17 tires as the original equipment size on 17X7.5" wheels on thousands of 1995 M3 cars, and otehr German car makers have gone slightly outside of specs in other OE applications.

The tire will appear stretched out over the wheel from a cosmetic standpoint. A tire outside of recommended rim width range is not rated to perform optimally when outside that given range. 225/45R17 would be the optimal size for the E36 on that width of wheel IMO.
