I have a 2002 330xi, I got new brakes and the back brakes still hum when I back up. Before the new brakes the steering wheel would vibrate when braking only at a certain speed approx 40-50 MPH, this continued after the new brakes and would do this everytime I passed through this speed zone when braking moderatly to come to a stop. All of the sudden this has stopped.
The other part of this is that we took the car back to place that did the brakes - they inspected the car and said it was the steering control arm and used the term 'spongy', they said this was a warranty repair and to take it to the one and only local BMW dealer service center. The BMW dealer said it was not the steering control arm, but that all 4 rims are bent, I should spend over $1,000 on these parts and once we get the new rims on they could rule out the rims if it still had the vibration. I told the snotty service advisor that I didn't know who to believe since the other shop had the honesty factor in my eyes since they had turned away a chance to make money - they could have done the work and charged me for the job and not told me it was covered under the warranty, or they had the perfect chance to completly rip me off - but they didn't, they did the honest thing instead, and that I bring my car in for what I think is a warranty (no-cost) service to be told it's not that at all and that I should spend over $1,000 to buy new rims to rule out bent rims as being the cause of the vibration.
The other part of this that makes me not trust the BMW center is that the first shop said we could bring the car back and they would put it up on the lift and show us the spongy steering control arm (for free). The service advisor at BMW had no interest in showing me how I had 4 bent rims, other than calling his 'best' technician on the radio in front of me to have him personally confirm that his analysis was that I had 4 bent rims. I'm no mechanic, but I've looked at the rims and had friends look too and we can't see with our untrained eyes anything that would indicate 1 bent rim (I don't think you have to be a rocket scientist to tell if a round object is bent or dinged), much less 4.
Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated - my warranty runs out in a couple weeks and I want to resolve this. Should I pay to get a third opinion or drive 125 miles to take it the the next cloeset dealer????? Help!:yikes:
