Does anyone have any info on the reliability of the higher mileage M5's. What should I be looking for?

While I don't think there is anything special to look out for you do need to make sure that the regular wear and tear items are in good working order (like the clutch and seals).

Also, make sure that both, Inspection I and II have maybe even III have been done. Run a dealer history report to make sure the car has been taken care of. Oh, and always get a PPI (pre purchase inspection) done before you buy it.

The M5 is a dependable car as long as it's maintained properly (which can be somewhat expensive).

Anyone else have any opinions or experience?????????????

I bought my 12/00 build 2001 M5 in 03/05. 46,000 miles. I think it was off lease. I changed out all the fluids and now have 64,000 miles.

To help cover any issues, I purchased an extended warranty from AA Auto warranty (www.AAAutoWarranty.com) for 3 years and til 75,000 miles, $100 deductible.

The only issue I've had was a broken CV joint that was covered. Most experts feel that the weak areas are clutch, brakes and a carbon build up issue.

Build dates prior to 03/00 have different piston rings and burn more oil and require 10W60 oil. After 03/00 the rings were changed ad oil usage is down. I may use a quart between changes (every 6 months for me)

I also reccomend www.m5board.com. Lots of good experience there.
