View Full Version : Gary, How much weight does chrome add to a wheel ? Is it much heavier ?
I am really referring to the new Corvette which comes with regular painted light grey wheels .. .as an option, you can purchase the same exact wheel in chrome which looks IMo really nice
Some people on the corvette board are saying that the difference in finish between paint and chrome should be VERY little.
I would hate to spend $1850 for an option that would hurt performance ... thanks !!

Nanograms more. Really, coatings like that are so thin they could only add a couple of grams per wheel. It shouldn't be a factor unless you plan to run at over Warp20 on a regular basis. I think paint (or better, powder coating) would be more than chrome because it can't possibly be as thin. Chrome plating is only .0002" to .002" thick, paint and powder coating can be 3 to 10 times that.

Correct, we did not notice differences in weight based on changes in wheel finish only.

Glad things like this are asked, it helps dispel the "all chrome wheels are heavy" notion. We have done 22" chrome 3pc forged wheels that weighed LESS than the 19" OEM wheels!!
