yes i did it
i live in cali and they require it
but i havent had any trouble
but i bought the replacement strip
so theres not those ugly holes
its 9.95 from www.bavauto.com

the picture is dark but there are NO ugly holes, I merely amputated the bottom portion off of the license plate holder, the original 1-3/4" top section has been retained.

I remove the front plate panel on all my cars. Most of them can be removed without leaving any tell tale holes.
