Remote lock feature stopped working without warning.
Doors lock manually with key but when I push the lock button on the key remote,
the car alarm chirps twice (normally chirps once) and door does not lock.Same result when I push the unlock button, two chirps but no activity on the lock.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Bob

...Don't tell me........you've got an E36 with a sunroof?

I had exactly the same problem, and 3 different BMW dealer mechanics told me that it was the "Central locking Control module" and then proceeded to give me a location for this part. All 3 were locations were different!!!! And, all their diagnosis were wrong: -

CAVEAT - THIS MAY BE THE RH seat on LH drive cars.
Remove LH seat, remove trim holding carpet, lift carpet as much as possible, gasp in amazement at the amount of water in the footwell, dry out said water.
Then, find the 7 way (Brown wires) connector (It's usually attached to the ridge going cross-wise under the seat). This will be covered in green corrosion, and at least one of the wires will be loose. Remove connector (Snip all wires off), strip wires back and re-tin them all with Solder. Solder all of them together, or use a strip connector. Insulate afterwards of course.

Then, mend (Or rather correct a really bad design) the sunroof. Remove roof furniture (Handles, sun-visor) and peel back the roof lining - be careful not to bend it as it's a pre-formed plastic shape. You will see daylight through the mechanism of the sunroof, this is where the water gets in - even though the drain hole is working! - and the only way to stop the water getting in is to bury the area in Silicon (The stuff you use to seal round your bath. Be careful that none of it gets up into the mechanism of the roof.
Leave to set and test with a watering can.
The water gets in at this point, runs down the roof lining, then down the front window pillar lining and into the footwell.
The rain gets in if you park on an angle (As per a road camber) or when travelling, you brake during rain. On the latter, the water (Obviously) rushes forward and surges over the drain hole and into your roof.

I had alarm problems too. In the end I disconnected the car battery for 1 hour. Its been perfect for two weeks now. Check all the associated fuses, too. :bigpimp:
