After hooking up the sport mode light (tapping pin 8 into pin 4, which is hot at all times on connector X17) all was well. Since then I drove the car 6 to 7 times afterwards, but in the daytime only. The other day as I was driving during dusk, I turned on the headlights (I've had HIDs for four years now) and my cluster went berserk. The odo became garbled and the gas, coolant temp, and tach all went to zero although everything was still lit. Off the top of my head the tire pressure sensor, gear icon, and maybe a couple others lit up. I pulled over, shut off the car and tried to get into 'test' mode to no avail. It would just read code where the odo should be and on the right, I can scroll through numbers but they don't do anything. When I stop on 'Code 19" which should be test 19 for unlocking cluster functions, nothing happens.
While depressing the mileage reset button and turning the ignition into the first detent, this display comes up.

When the ignition is turned on, this is displayed (note that the tamper LED it lit:

I've been running HIDs for four years with no cluster flickering and other ill effects. I'm curious if this is all coincidental or whatever. What's weird is that the speedo works but it's off and doesn't drop down normally, rather it floats down slowly. No coolant temp, no odo, no tach, no gas gauge  but it's still perfectly driveable :p, just gotta keep tabs on the gas:)

Anyone have a clue what could be causing my cluster to throw a "Code 1" and not be able to enter test?

This happened to me.

You have to replace the entire cluster, transfer the code plug from your current cluster, and get the car re-coded to accept it. You cannot do this without a dealer and a Moditec.

Your wallet will be about $500 lighter.

Save your old cluster. Makes a nice desk decoration.

Dru, I might be able to help out.

PM me next time you're online.

Why did you tap X17 pin 8 to pin 4?

Hey Jon, yeah I read your thread while doing searches... I never had any flickering of the cluster, but who knows... my cluster could be a goner. About a year ago I was about to pick up a used S54 cluster on Ebay as a showpiece. I guess I now have an excuse although my wallet's going to drop some serious pounds. It seems like quite a few people have failed clusters from the searches that I've run although none mentioned that they had aftermarket HIDs.

Benny, I'll let you know. Thanks man.

Hey Ron, I followed the RFDM guide to enabling the sport mode light. Pin 4 is the red/blue wire.http://www.rfdm.com/SportMode/pics/X17_1_25.jpg

Pin 8 is the sport light. Why did you tap it to pin 4?

I tapped pin 8 to pin 4 to give power to the sport light. Could this be the cause?
