A couple of ED-related questions...

1. If the car is under my name, am I the only driver insured on it, or can my fiancee drive it as well?

2. Can anyone who has taken delivery after early October (on a 330 with SP if applicable) tell me how the conditions were in Austria/Switzerland and how the car handled it?

1) Anyone with a valid license can drive it. They must sign on the insurance document. So this is a non-issue.

2) Early October delivery will be very tough due to:

a) Change of model year. ED cars are build at least 1 month in advance. Since "normal" new model year production begins on late September (and the factory shut down the month before for retool), you car will have to be build in late August as a prior year model. This is not a big deal if you don't care the 1 model year difference when you sell you car.

b) Early October is the end of Oktoberfest. Munich is rocking w/ tourist. The hotels are impossible to come by in the state of Bavaria. And the room price are outrageously high.

c) Same reason as above, flights to Munich will be at its peak. Be prepared to shell out some dough for airfare.

d) EVERYBODY wants to do their ED during Oktoberfest. The spots are hard to come by.

Your fiancee can drive it as long as she signs the insurance form they give you when you pick up the car.

I picke up my car on november 22nd and drove thru the Austrian and Italian Alps albeit on the motorways. It rained heavily in the Italian section but there was no snow. also, if you take the motorways, they are pretty well maintained and don't have steep grades or hairpin bends like the Alpine passes might. You also end up going thru a lot of tunnels, some of them really long. If you want to drive thru the Alpine passes, that might be a different story.

I drove through Switzerland with my 325i SP around 11/27 (San Bernardino tunnel) and 12/1 (San Gottard tunnel).

It was a little hairy in the San Bernardino route, roads were wet, complete snow cover near Splugen (roads were cleared), and I was worried about ice. Trucks were being stopped.

The roads for San Gottard are less windy and more heavily travelled (if less scenic). The car handled things well (light rain), but I would be concerned with lower temperatures and snow.
