I changed the trans fluid in my manual 98 328 last night. It's the yellow sticker and I had checked around and found that people are actually putting ATF in it and they also claim that it clears up the notchiness of the shift. I've only driven it once since them but the notchiness is still there. Sychros are probably worn a little. I am wondering if I should go get the Redline MT instead though and try it. The ATF sure seemed thin for Manual trans fluid. What are other people running?

Also, the original fluid is what was in there (with 87K on it). It was cloudy and had the weirdest smell I have ever come across with gear oil. It smelled like vinyl/plastic. Like you just opened a raft for the pool. That's some funky stuff...

Oh, and no metal shavings whatsoever on the drain plug...that made me feel better...

My mechanic replaced my tranny fluid with synthetic ATF fluid. Shifted better initially but the notchiness eventually returned to first gear when cold. Had the differential lube replaced too. Preventive maintenance.

My mechanic replace my tranny fluid with red line oil. The bottles said atf but also for manual transmissions.
