right now, i have a 01 530i sport. i love it... but its time to upgrade to the e39 m5. i was wondering about maint. issues. how much on avg does it run for oil changes, minor and major tuneups? i just spend 1300 on my 60k tune up on the 530i, and im thinking about selling it. any problems that you guys are running into engine wise? thanks in advance!

The secret to a happy M5 ownership is finding the right one in the right condition. Parts for the M5 will be more expensive, and perfoming regular maintenance will be crucial (change oil every 5k, etc.).

Some general prices I pay:
Oil change - $80
Tranny flush - $70

The cars are known for having weak clutches (an aftermarket one will run you around $1500 (OEM will be $1000)). Otherwise, it's no different than other BMW's. Do regular maintenance and you will be happy, let things go and it will break the bank.

I highly recommend that you take your time and try to find a well maintained and clean example (even if it costs a little more). Getting one that was abused and then trying to "clean it up" can get very expensive.

But, once you get one it will put a smile on your face every day. :D

Try to stay away from pre march of 2000, old ring designs consume alot more oil, 2-3 times actually. 2001+ models upgraded nav, headlights and tailights; but like Ark said, best is a clean bill of health so to speak. Despite the problems I've had, this car is nothing less than great.

Are you saying that you are wanting to sell b/c of a $1300 inpsection 2? If that is the case then an M5 is NOT for you. Anything M will be more expensive than any regular model.

I would be careful with that one. That's an extremely good price if everything checks out. One of those "almost too good" situations, in fact.

That's what I thought! But after talking to the mechanic, he says jump and I'm feeling REAL froggy! Like I mentioned, I take a shakedown/inspection flight today.

Gentlemen, It's better than I could've ever wished for. I am now an M-Boy! The car is near perfect. Aside from needing a set of tires and a broken trim clip, this car (MY car :D ) is immaculate. Had my mechanic do a thorough inspection on it, and it came back with a clean bill of health. I STILL can't believe how fortunate I was. Somebody up there really likes me. AND to boot, turns out he needed a car to beat around in, so he got my e34! How's that for a plan coming together. Saved me from having to sell it. He took really good care of this one, So I know old faithful will be in good hands. I'm so happy I could just............:bawling:
