View Full Version : Oh boy, SS Race cans+Y pipe too loud!

Without the benefit of hearing this system on another car, I made a big mistake. Just picked up the car with the Supersprint Race mufflers and the Connecting "Y" pipe installed, and by the time I got home 15 mins later, I realise this setup is way, way too loud for my tastes. It's mega-boomy at even the slightest prodding of the throttle. As per my agreement with Chris, I'm going to send back the race cans and exchange them for the "sport performance" cans. My question for you all is, do you think this is going to tame the sound levels enough, or do I need to also reinstall the stock resonator pipe?

Thats why you should always wait for the sound clip before buying exhausts

Sound clips aren't going to tell you anything about the sound levels inside the cabin, only how it sounds from the outside (to others).

How far are we into interior-sound deadening technology these days?

Also, I take it this means you don't recommend Super Sprints?

What about Eisenmen.

I tried telling you race was too loud, but you did not want to listen to the board.

The Sport will be just perfect for you.

I have sport exhaust with X pipe. It is perfect. Car has just enough back pressure gruggle and sounds awesome on WOT.

It will also still pass sound at Laguna Seca...which is where I am off this weekend.

Cheers.

I said very loud.:p

I have a race car, so loud for me is nice, but I have yet to meet anyone who likes the Rcae version of SS or of Eiesnmann, Its like the old BB race exhaust.

I do not take back what I said, I did say loud....oh fine.....suit on :flame:

Who ever said "Be careful what you wish for..." was a very wise man. I said I wanted it loud, wanted it to wail, and I got what I wished for, but this setup is loud all the time, except when no gas is applied, such as cruising at a constant speed. With the Stradale, it got progressively loud, and when it hit 6k, the vacuum actuated exhaust flaps opened up and bypassed the mufflers altogether. I admit I made a mistake, and hopefully the sport/perf mufflers will satisfy my auditory requirements. If that's still too loud, then the resonator section will go back on. With shipping and uninstall/reinstall charges, this is becoming a very expensive f**kup! Interestingly, with my E60 M5, I just added a Y pipe, and now it's perfect for me as a daily driver. But it does have that great V10 rumble ;) As they say; "back to the drawing board"!

Try it without the stock resonator, this should give you excellent interior sound!

Hey man, I know everyone's giving you some shiz for this, and I'm sure it's mostly for fun. I for one appreciate the fact that you're not afraid to jump out there with money in hand and start blazing a trail. Many times several of us have jumped in with nothing but hope and dollars to see what happens. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Ask Ron Stygar about how much he's spent to be first "coming online" with new stuff. Anyway, thanks for your efforts. I listen and learn, and I won't be making the mistake you just made.

Thanks again for the leadership.

...and of course you'll be sharing your experiences with us come Monday.

Right?

And Goodwood, thanks for being the guinea pig, and I know you'll end up with something that makes you happy.

No. He never said that. Re-read his post again.

Thats why you should always wait for the sound clip before buying exhausts

If we all waited for others to remove all of the risks in mods, maintenance, car care, etc. before we made decisions, we would be waiting a long time. If you haven't noticed, people on this forum are not afraid to take risks and share their results with others.

Sound clips of exhausts are relatively useless anyway. You need to hear the exhaust in real life, under various conditions, and decide for yourself.

Then you should try to read more carefully.

People will be more likely to help you and answer your questions if your posts are constructive and respectful. Posting "you should have done this" after the fact does not help anyone.

Was told one thing by the salseguy, then another by the boss. Salsguy said if the rece cans were too loud for me I could send them back for an exchange to the street versions. When I called today, the bossman said an exchange policy has never been in place, and that I was misinformed. What he recommended at this point was to at least try the stock resonator on the race cans, and see if that doesn't tone it down enough for my tastes. Failing that, I will be forced to purchase yet another set of mufflers, and try those either with or w/o the Y pipe. Or, I could even try the Y pipe with the stock cans. This is what worked so well for me with my E60 M5. Stay tuned, there might be a set of VERY lightly used (10 mi) Supersprint Race mufflers for sale at a substantial discount!

Failing that, I may be interested in the SS Race cans, so please pm me here or on that other board us Coupe guys are visiting...

+1.

If it weren't for all the information on the forums, I'd never have done any mods to my car.

Ricky @BMP suggested 1st trying the stock Y pipe with the SS race cans, but I really don't think this is going to tame it enough for my tastes. I initially thought I wanted it really loud, but now, after driving it and hearing it in-cabin, changed my tune (pun intended). Might be fine for the "younger set" (I'm in my 50's), and those that track their car regularly, and wear a helmet.

Choice 2 is SS Street cans with the SS Y pipe.

Choice 3 is SS Street cans with the Stock Res pipe.

Finally, choice 4 is SS Y pipe with the Stock cans.

Cost-wise, using the already installed SS Y pipe with the stock cans is going to be the least expensive alternative. I could then sell the SS Race cans to someone at a good discount.
However, my hunch tells me that the SS Street cans with the stock res pipe is going to appeal to me most. This is what I had on my Audi S6 Avant 4.2, and after 3 yrs, I thought they were perfect. Constructive thoughts anyone?

LOL..... I am hoping that I am going to get a call sometime soon saying I can pick up my car but I am not holding my breath! BMW is really handling this situation in a really poor manner.

Really wanted to try their street cans either with or w/o their Y pipe, but they're backordered for 4-6 wks. So, for now, I've decided to put the stock cans back on, combined with their Y pipe.
