Would i be a fool to purchase an M3 with the intent of using it for winter driving (w/snows of course). Any experiences out there?

Not at all... but, you will need a good set of winter tires (ala Blizzak).

I've driven both an E36 and E46 M3 in the snow with blizzaks for years without any problems. It really all depends on how bad the conditions are. I think the limit for me is around 5-6 inches of unplowed snow. Any more than that and I'm hesitant to drive and try to get a ride if I really need to get somewhere, especially anything uphill.

On the E46 I use skinnier 17inch wheels so I'd imagine a similar setup would work for the E90 depending on what the final horsepower/torque will be.

The biggest problem I have is trying to see around snow banks built up on the sides of roads and parking lots. I've had several close calls trying to inch out into the road and see if anything is coming before pulling out.

nah... You can if you like with good snows and a 17" rim but with all the snow your state gets, I'd say, "It's really not worth the trouble/danger" that some knucklehead hits you.
