gas smell after fill up

I smell gas in the garage ONLY after a fill up. Less than 3/4 tank, no smell. But NEVER inside the car. That is why I have not checked under the rear seat.

Car has 164000 miles. New fuel filter last year.

Do the charcol filters need to be replaced eventually?

They can become ineffective/damaged/worn after a while and so could in theory produce the problem you are getting.

No idea how much they are (cant find them on the sites i used here in the UK) but maybe worth a try. if no, take the back seat out and check all the lines for wear and tare
