View Full Version : Future MINI engines
Wow, this board is REALLY slow...
I'm not sure if this is old news, but...
It appears BMW will be ending its partnership with Daimler-Chrysler in the manufacture of the 1.6l motor currently used in the Mini/Cooper/Cooper S. They are already working with PSA Peugeot/Citroen to build next-generation Mini powerplants.
OK, so I guess my prediction of the N42 making it into the Mini is down the toilet. :p

When our club had an event at the local Mini dealer they told us the next gen Minis would have a Mini engineered engine. They talked like it's planned to spin off Mini after a couple years and BMW would get out of it completely.

This seems to be oue of the rumors floating around. With the need these days for automakers to consolidate (or at least have VERY close ties like Porsche to VAG) in order to survive, I doubt this will happen unless MINI gets sold (in part or whole) to another carmaker.

The four pots in the MINIs were originally developed with Chrysler (before DaimlerChrysler existed). No engine being produced (or anywhere near being production ready) by BMW could be shoehorned into the packaging they wanted for the MINI.
Speculation has run rampant about future changes to the MINI in both drivetrain and platform. Trying to make sense of all the different stories and rumors would make your head spin. At this point, I wouldn't fully trust anything I heard unless it came in the form of a press release (or something similar) from MINI or BMW themselves.
I believe its been officially announced now that future MINI engines will be co-developed with PSA Peugeot/Citroen.
