I've been going through all the scenarios for purchasing winter tires and decided to just trash the run flats and put winter tires directly on to the standard wheels, then buy summer rims and tires in the Spring. While still revelling in my own brilliance I discovered that there are no winter tires that fit the 9 inch wide rear wheel of the 550i. Back to the drawing board!

Would I have to settle for an all season, and if so, is there an all season that comes closer to the winter end of the spectrum?

245/40R18 winter tires will fit on your rear 9" wheels with no problem.

You still had a the right idea.

245/40? isn't that 2cm too narrow? same size as 8" front?

wouldn't 225/45R18 and 255/40R18 be a more natural pairing if going for narrower?

Rim width range on the 245/40R18 tires is 8-9.5"

You could run 225/45R18 up front but this will complicate finding matching tires. IMO for simplicity just use 245/40R18 all around.

I chose those staggered sizes off of your in-stock inventory of Mich Alpin 2s. You are probably right about sticking to a single size for convenience, though. I was more concerned about uniform appearance and making sure the rear would be wide enough to combat curb rash.

ordered 245/40R18 and the local installer refused to mount them. Too narrow for the rim and they would not take responsibility. Oh well, sent them back and will consider 265/35r18, or buy new wheels.

They are incorrect on the rim width range. Take the tires to a different installer.
