It's your throw-out bearing. It will have to be replaced soon, so you might as well do the clutch at the same time.

Apparently, high mileage E36's can have issues with the fly wheel teeth breaking apart. This happened to my car this past week. If you are considering replacing the clutch have the mechanic look at the fly wheel too.

If with slight pressure on the pedal the noise is louder it is definitly the throw out bearing

With the pedal all the way down it won't be as loud but you can still hear hear the noise, and you'll hear it more in the lower gears

Don't worry too much, a noisy bearing can last for a long time, but if the change starts to get notchy it's time to get it fixed

Most mechanics will fit a new clutch at the same time. This a reasonably easy but expensive job because the box has to come out but you'll probably never have to have it done again

btw my car has had the problem since i got it 5k ago and hasn't got any worse so i reckon i can live with it
