the other day my boyfriend pushed some button on my stock radio in my 97 328i&the stations started to mute. i'd change it to a different station&it'd be regular but then it would start to mute again. i got really angry&started pushing all the buttons to try to fix it (not a good idea)&now my radio is stuck at station 2 on MUTE. it doesn't react to any buttons being pushed. does anyone know what's wrong? it's also a radio from a different model or something cus it's not compatible with the cd changer in the trunk. (see picture)<BR>

Our stock radio (same one in your pic) did the following, i'm not sure if it's the exact same as your symptoms:
1 - We'd turn on the radio and everything sounded fine.
2 - After a random amount of time the sound would just "fade out" on it's own.

I tried a bunch of things to figure it out, don't waste your time. Your Head Unit (Radio) is shot... get a new (used) one off e-bay... they're cheap.
We replaced the head unit & everything is fine again. Make sure you get the radio code off of whoever you buy another from.

It takes a few minutes to take the old one out & put the new (old) one in.
Here's a DIY that will give you an idea of how: http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/E36-Radio/E36-Radio.htm

Good Luck.
PS: tell your BF it's his fault (even tho it's not) and have him buy it... LOL.
