Hey guys and gals I've got myself a 1997 318i sedan with an auto transmission and I was wondering what that button near the transmission lever was for. I know it has something to do with the transmission shift pattern but i'm not so sure because when I select "M" I hear a whirring sound and when I select "S" or "E" it goes away. Thanks in advance.

i think this is how it goes...m for manual..s for sport..and e for economy...
i haven't read my owner's manual to find out how m /manual works..but that's what the 3 stands for...not sure what the whirring sound is about...suggest you either read your manual or find a good BMW shop and have them look/listen to it..
good luck
