Do you get your gas at the same station

Ours did the same thing when we picked it up with just 3 miles on it. I asked the salesman what that noise was when he first started it up (to test him) and he said that's a lifter noise which is normal. He said by the time he demonstrated the features of the car (about 10 minutes) it would be gone - and he was right. I though that was BS, but I remembered when we test drove the demo X3 we had the same noise (and I whispered to my wife, "we don't want this one, it has a floated lifter or two". Anyway, we haven't heard it since after 300 miles (we just bought it on 01/02/2007). Is your ticking/lifter noise happening all the time, or just when warming up? Also curious as to how many miles you have on yours.

RE: Do I get my fuel at the same station?
No, I have a long commute and get fuel at various stations.

RE: How many miles: 19,000.

BMW is replacing two valves/lifters, having found that they are not working properly.........

Likewise at 10 miles pickup heard ticking and thought oh ****, got a lemon.

But no, by the next startup it was gone and has never come back.

1100 miles now in 3 weeks. Great car.

I'm pretty sure its the VANOS unit. Common on all 3-ers. (Or X3s)

I heard this ticking sound myself this morning on my 07 X3 (1500 miles on it). All indications on this forum say it is normal, but I'll have it checked nevertheless. It does disappear after a few minutes drive.

I too get the ticking every now and then. I notice that it happens more when it is starting from a VERY cold start (i.e. been outside for hours in NY weather) and tends to happen less when I leave in the AM where it is in a covered underground garage (probably around 50 degrees +/-). It usually goes away, but sometimes sticks for a little while, everything I have read says it is normal.
