My friend swears to me that there are "M" version X3's -- i.e. there is an M logo on the back of the car and the door sills have the M logo on them as you enter the car. If there is a such a thing, I'm totally clueless -- what is he talking about?
This has just been covered this week - try to search the forum and you will find it. The answer is by the way no M.

The X3 W/ SP has ///M logos on the door sill, steering wheel and rims. BUT it is FAR away from being an M. There is no other version of the X3 (In the U.S.) other than the 3.0si. I think BMW thought if we slap ///M logos on the car more people will buy it. :) The real reason though is that any X3 with SP is just a X3 with the european ///M Sport Package that is avalable on all bimmers in other markets besides the U.S.
BTW...there is no ///M logo on the rear.

Also, on the manual transmission variation of the sport package, it has a M logo on the shifter.
This M by the way will make the car shift 0.1 second faster :)
