Definitely not 2.8. This confirms a rumor that I read in a car magazine a while ago-- that BMW was gong to put the new 2002 racks in 330s only. I think I read that in an April issue of Autocar. I didn't believe it because it seemed like it would be more of a pain for BMW to put different racks in different models-- but now we know for sure. I believe I have the "new new" steering because it is kind of firm-- but I'd still like it firmer. Given this I've decided to go ahead w/ my scheduled retrofit tomorrow-- wish me luck! I have driven 99s and 00s, so I know that this steering is firmer than what I currently have. Assuming my dealer doesn't F*** it up, I think this will make me happy. I've written out a list of "things to check" for the dealer, to minimize the chance that they screw it up and I have to go back. ;)
Its pretty amazing that 2001 cars had 3-4 different steering systems (new, new new, 2002, and retrofit if you count that. My guess is that they didn't have enough of the 2002 model racks (or they had already ordered a certain amount of the 2001 type racks), so they didn't include the 2002 rack on all late 2001 cars. I also have a hunch that the "new new" steering was really the "new" steering w/ a different steering coupler. If it was really a slightly different rack, that really makes no sense-- they should've just gone to the 2002 racks across the board.
