3000 mile issue [Archive] - Bimmerfest

Hi,
I am about to break 3000 miles on my new X3. I am enjoying this car so much that I am already over my lease allowance. Anyway, the vehicle is very quiet. Early this morning in cold New England, I drove to Dunkin Donuts for my regular cup of coffee. However, today my daughter was in the car and I let the car idle while I went inside.

I noticed a significant tapping sound from the engine. You can't hear from the inside but outside it was a bit disconcerting. Any ideas?

Check your oil level. Some oil will usually be consumed during break-in.

Check your oil level. Some oil will usually be consumed during break-in.
If it is low oil level the light would come on. I'm going in next week for service and a ticking noise. The SA seems to thing it could be the air pump. The noise is only there when the engine is cold.
