i was wondering if any of you know where i can get a shift knob with gear positions on top of the knob but it has a light so you can see it at night. i've seen a pic of it on this forum, but now i can't find it.
thanx

It's the "M" shift knob -- available either as a 6-speed (if you have an M3) or a 5-speed.
On the other hand, if you have to look at your shift knob to know what gear you're in......:yikes:
.. for E46 (5 speed) is
25 11 9 415 379
Just had mine fitted. Looks good. Never looked at the Knob before, but I do now!

I recommend the UUC Motorwerks RK Magnum shift knob, instead. The lighted knob is pretty, but the RK shifts BETTER.

See my sig for pics of the knob. :)

Yes, but the lighted knob doesn't require a separate booty to keep your hand from freezing/burning...

Good point. Eyes should be on the road, not on the shift knob.
I'd be interested in a non-M myrtle wood lighted 5-speed shifter.
Jon S. was working on these in the past, but I understand he's not doing them anymore. Anyone else know of any sources?

You're thinking of Jon M (aka LeatherZ) not Jon S.
Iguess you could try contacting him through his website (leatherz.com) but I haven't tried it in a while and have no idea if he's still in business.
Honestly, though, this sounds like something that would be rather easy to assemble on your own. A small light, a piece of wire and the $8 BMW part for the shift pattern that allows light through (from the '98/'99 M3 illuminated shifter) and you're in business. A 15 minute trip to Radio Shack should get you everything you need except the shift pattern insert.
from Leather Z (I really wasn't thinking of Shafer, I thought John's last name began with an "S" too).
In any event, you know how un-handy I am. If you really think that this is an easy DIY job, perhaps you'd like to get together some weekend and we can take a stab at it? I'd even bring my digicam and we could post pix (you could submit it to the 330ci DIY site and get all the credit), and I'd promise not to drink any more than two of your freshly made brewskis.
Whadya' think?

I don't feel that inspired. To do a project like this, I have to care about it myself. Personally, I think the idea is a bit silly. I mean, I remember where the gears are during the day without looking at my non-illuminated shift know and I have no problem remembering at night either. And I doubt anyone would be impressed by an illuminated shift know and, if anyone WAS impressed, I'd be a bit unimpressed with how easy they were to impress.
Offering to bring beer to use my tools and garage in the course of doing your own project is one thing, but offering to come, have me do your project and drink MY beer isn't particularly appealing on any level.
Nice try... (actually, not even...)

don't worry, it's not that i need the gear numbers in order to shift..hehe. it's just for show. i think it's cool that it's lighted so at night it looks cool when shifting...to the passengers anyway. the uuc shiftknob is a very nice knob, but i am not sure if i want to mod the interior with uuc because they are very costly. and once i get the knob, i would want the pedals and everything else offer by uuc just to make it consistant...well that's me anyway.
by the way, thanx for the part number, but where do i get it, is it a genuine bmw part???
Tom, as president of your fan club, I hate to be the one to break the news to you...
but you've got absolutely no sense of humor.

That was a surprisingly good comeback...:thumb:
was "a surprisingly good comeback," I can see why everyone must think Tom has one heckuva' sense of humor.

You're quite juvenile for a geezer. And I'm really not inthe mood for your yammering. So... you're joining Ryan330Ci on my Ignore List.
BTW, have you EVER actually contributed to one of these forums? All I can recall is a series of obnoxious quips.
We used to sell OEM aluminum (matte chrome and brushed chrome) illuminated shift knobs. Ours lit up amber, not red like BMW. We think red is incorrect, since it doesn't match the dash lights. The guy doing the machining however was a flake so we couldn't fill all of our orders. We found a new shop in the midwest that appears to be much more reliable. Should have them up on our site by mid-March.
Jon, I'm psyched--that's great news--thanks! Please let me know when they're available (or if you need someone to beta test one!).
Tom, please don't take it out on me if you're unhappy these days (working too hard, not sure if you'll have follow-on work in a month or two, aren't seeing your kid enough, wife having to go to work, made a bad trade on your car and regretting it, etc., etc.).
Lighten' up Francis.

What do you do to get it to light up amber? Just a different filter for the LED? Or a different number plaque?
To get the knob to light up amber, you need to replace the 3 red LEDs with Amber ones. This is one of the tricks of the whole deal. To find LEDs with long life (aka Radio Shack sucks ass) and in sufficient brightness is not easy. We buy 2000 at a time.

Jon, can you post your web site URL here? I see UUC, etc thrown around here a lot, so I assume it would be okay with the moderators. I'd like to check into getting one of those puppies this spring. :thumb:
Okay TD, so I'm easily impressed. :p
