Anyone know if you can buy a 1 series there and about how much? I am assuming anything bigger would be a massive car in Japan.
<EDIT>Never mind. I found price list on BMW Japan website. It looks like:
116i (Y2,950,000) about $24,500
130i (Y4,910,000) about $40,800
335i (Y6,680,000) about $55,500
So, my next question is, what are the real costs of operating a car in Japan? I know that parking and road tolls are very high.

It is expensive. Im japanese and I visit Japan every year. To own a car in Japan is luxury.
Many people do not own a car because they don't have a garage and parking lots are expensive.
Also if you decide to drive on the highway that is also expensive. There is a toll like every 10 miles.

The registration fees, etc are pretty steep, and depending where you are parking might be more of an issue than driving. The used cars there seem to be fairly cheap, that might be an option...

Parking really depends on where in Japan you'll be at. If you are in a more rural location (relatively speaking), parkng won't be an issue. If you are in Tokyo, I don't think you can buy a car without proof of a parking spot. Still, I've gotten along fine in Japan for long periods without a car - anything of interest always seem to be accessible via public transportation.

Sure is a big jump between the 116 and the 130; bigger than the jump between the 130 and the 335.
