Your dealer is wrong. Manual transmission is the default and should be always available. Try to talk to another dealer if you can.

Look in the 5 Series Product Planning and Strategy sticky in this forum. It mentions 6-speed manual as standard with start of production 09/2007 for 535i/xi models. There is no mention of transmissions for xiT models, but maybe they are included under xi models. I also want to order 6-MT 535xiT, but we won't wait until after September.

Note that automatics are listed as a no cost option. MY 2008 begin production in March 2007.

I am in the pre-order stage for a MY2008 535i and dealer ordering system would not accept a 6sp MT for SOP in March 2008. MTs are no longer the default configuration for MY2008 5ers. Autos are "no-cost options," which really means that they're the default configuration and MTs are the option. Per the MY 2008 BMW ordering guide, SOP for manual transmissions on the 535i/ix is Sep-07. This is very frustrating for us MT types, and a change in philosophy for BMWs, which have always been available, with a few exceptions, with MTs from the start of production.

I am sorry for your pain.... this is the reason I went with the 2007 while I still could. I will only drive a manual.
There is no real reason for this in my mind. I can not figure this out either. The only thing I can figure is that BMW committed so many units to the new auto and that the only way they maybe able to meet that between the 5 and X5 is that it is the only one offered. The other thing is if you look at the recent history BMW has added options and changed systems in a few models during September production months. The group prior to this (early adopters aka Beta testers) saved a few hundred dollars but lost features and had more problems than the cars produced after September. This is what happened with the E90.....

Best of luck and if you are getting an auto, wait until June for the Sport auto.

I'd only do the Sport Auto - I have to have something for my hands (fingers) to do -- to continue to be engaged in the driving.

I dont think he is wrong - look at the order guide on this site - it says option 205 steptronic (automatic) transmission is required for the 535 model (for now).

Ok - this has been discussed countless times. Look at the BMW product strategy sticky on this forum http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=184186 . Now look at this quoted text under Performance and Transmissions:

Transmissions
6-speed manual transmission standard (SOP 09/07 for 535i/xi models)

The above means that for 535i and xi the manual will be available starting September so currently from now to September, you only can get the automatic hence the ordering guide. So 538i/xi and 550i are available with manual starting March production.

How many of you paid the $1,300 Gas Guzzler Tax on your 6 Speed MT???? I know that for the 2007 550i's, if you chose either the SMG or 6MT you had to pay the GGT:mad:

Of course, $1,300 is not as bad as $3,700 for the M5's 6MT GGT

Cheers,

Correct, ZF cannot make enough for the 335 and 535. They have to ramp up.

I say that's a "yay" because in previous year's ordering guides the wagon page is lableled 530xi Sports Wagon and not 530xiT, and since we've already established that the 2008 Product Planning and Strategy says 6-MT SOP 09/07 for 535i/xi models, I reach my conclusion.

Bet the ranch? No, but I have a doghouse I could wager. :bigpimp:

Production start March - you can order it now but no pricing available. Should be arriving mid to late April at dealers.

ED should have no effect. If you look at the stickies at the top of the E60 board, you will find all of this information -- the manual transmission is SOP ("start of production") 09/07 for the 535i/xi. Probably won't be able to get a manual 535i or xi before October...
