Does anyone know how much it costs to install the X3 alarm system? My dealer quoted nearly $900 for parts and labor... is that reasonable?

I hear it's an easy install you can do yourself and then have the alarm activated by the dealer. Use the search function on the forums to search for more information.

Here are the approximate prices of the parts and labor:

Parts (one kit with everything) -- List approx. $250; discount from Circle or others at less than $200.

Instalation: 1.0 to 1.5 hours. You can do it yourself, but it is bit of a pain (see below).

Coding: 0.5 hours. (Some dealers do it for free as part of a regular service. You can NOT do it yourself.)

My installation notes are at:

The "official" instructions are at:
http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/X3_Alarm_Instructions.pdf

If you buy the kit from your local parts counter, be nice to the parts staff and ask them to print out a copy of the latest instructions for you.

I usually don't work on anyone's vehicles except my own, but for $900 I'd consider doing your installation (and I'm in California)! :D

One thing to be aware of - the '07 X3 alarm uses a new siren which has an integrated tilt sensor. As a result, there are only two components to install, the ultrasonic sensor and the new version of the siren. Makes the install a little easier.

Prices and times in my post above are for the MY 2004-2006 system, assuming pre-wiring as in the PP. The instructions in the link are for those years also.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll just try to install it myself instead of paying nearly $600 installation fee.

Dude, your dealer is ripping you off. Paid mine a little over 200 and 150 for labor, although I'm not sure how pre-wired my 07 was before it was done. And yes, it has a tilt sensor and motion sensor on the interior, so I think it would be best to leave the installation to the pros.

$900 is a ripoff. I'd say $500 tops for parts + installation.

If I remember right, mine was around $400 back in 04 for my 05 X3.

One should remember that it is usually only good for locating your vehicle in a garage if you forget where you parked by hitting the panic button. :tsk:
