Are you talking about the Samco boot that bimmerworld offers?? It will help you out some, but if your going to do it make sure you finish it out with a heatshield and cone filter.
I know several people that have done it and i am putting on the 3.5 Euro one with in the next month while i am putting on my H&R Stage 4 coilover suspension, catback, and the rest of the CAI.

Allows more air to get into the car. The stock boot restricts the airflow. You can gain a few HP if you set it up correctly.

I've thought about it, but can't justify spending $120 on it.

120 is for the non euro one and 160 for the euro if i remember right. i took the euro one and know i am working on a custom heatshield and cone filter setup for it. Also i am not using any reducer from the 3.5 down to 3 on it either, using a MAF from a e39.

Also..the SAMCO boot will last alot longer. Most Police cars use SAMCO silicone hoses cause they last alot longer and they're more reliable.

Pirate...what did you make the heatshield out of and do you have any measurements by chance. I can go look at one and make a template from it but i am feeling a bit lazy to drive across town

well i wasn't going to pay $120 for a silicone elbow..im not using this as a intake just a traction control delete mod.. i do have a heat shield and a k&n cone filter..it's just a 3" plumbing elbow..i did this because i had a choice between the samco elbow or all the supplys to install m50 intake so i choze to install intake and buy a 10 elbow and i also did the fan delete at the same time.

You capped of what vacuum lines? I hope your'e not talking about the breather hoses from the bottom of the intake boot...that would cause it to die for sure.
