I have a 2004 X3. The compartment where the Nav would go (if I had one) does not open and is therefore useless. I notice the on the new x3 the compartment opens and is pretty handy. Can the new unit be retrofitted easily to the 2004? Anybody done it? Where do I get the part? Or should I just by the new X3?

Yes you can retrofit the storage compartment.

STORAGE TRAY IN INSTRUMENT PANEL part 51163402391

Cost about $130 at your dealer. Make sure to ask for the gray one as I believe the top of your dashboard is gray.

That's strange. Our 2004 was delivered with the hinged storage bin on the dashboard, where the NAV screen would have been.

Do you have the premium package? Cuz our X3 (with premium) does have the storage bin.

Good point. We have the premium package as well.

I believe that was an option in the "storage package". Mine doesn't have the opening dash storage bin, nor the nets on the backs of the two front seats, or the mesh compartments in the back doors like it has in the front doors.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I just ordered a dark grey storage compartment from the local dealer. Now when I buy a Garmin Nav, I will have a place to put it.
