I am thinking getting 535i, but not sure if the new 6-speed is worth waiting until september.
Is this similar to Audi DSG trans?

No, it's an automatic with a torque converter, not the dual clutch system of the DSG. That said, the transmission is reportedly more responsive. If you want to know for sure, drive a 335i, which has the same trans.

The transmission choices are somewhat confusing.

The manual transmission will not be available in the 535i/535ix until September production. I don't believe that this transmission has been changed from '07 or earlier production cars, but nobody knows for sure.

The standard automatic transmission (E-shift is what BMW is calling electronic shifting) will be available immediately. This is the one with the "silver stick" shifter and is the same 6 speed automatic transmission that's in the 335's and the X5. From what I've heard, it's faster and smoother than the older mechanical link Steptronic, and is a good combination with the turbo engine.

A new Sport Automatic transmission with paddle shifters, throttle blipping and supposedly faster response times in both automatic and manual modes will not be available until June production cars. BMW has said very little about this transmission, and there's a lot of conjecture about what it's really like.

Test drove 335 today, tranny is not electronic. Feels like same auto as in MY 2007 E60.

It is an auto, just a quicker shifting sportier version.

So that is not the new trans then, I guess.
