Was curious what you all think about a supercharger setup on a high (174K) mileage e36. Should I have the engine rebuilt first and then add the forced induction after the bank account recovers? Swap in a new motor and just get the supercharger right away? Any ideas?

Rebuild the engine and upgrade the engine component parts.... then supercharge.
Maybe you can get a used engine and have that rebuilt first and then do the swap. less down time.
dont forget about the drivetrain or brakes

^^^x2....if you don't you may go BOOM!!!so a piece of mind rebuild it for boost...
x3 Peice of mind and when you catch the FI bug the internals will allready be taken care of

Its possible to SC a high mileage motor w/o rebuilding it first. You will probably have excessive blow-by and if any of the cylinders are below the recommended compression number you will be aggravating the problem.
You might want to think about it this way. You have 175K on the motor now and you will probably want to get another 50-100K use out of as a SC motor.
That puts your total miles on the motor at somewhere around 225 to 275K.
If your compression numbers are good I would say proceed as long as you realize you can have problems.
