I noticed the other day driving behind my wife in her new 2007 X3, the dual tips on the exhaust. One port has a flapper/gate that was closed, but when the engine was turned off the flapper/gate opened. I sat there for a while and asked her to restart the X3 again and sure enough the flapper/gate modulated and then closed when the engine started.

Anyone got any ideas about this?, whats the purpose and function of this flapper/gate??

Regards,
Vipz

It keeps the exhaust quieter at low engine loads. If you pass or accelerate - it will open.

It operates with a vacuum - therefore will open when the engine is not running.

Do a search on butterfly valve. Some have it, some don't.

Strange. I've never encountered it before. I'm not disputing it; maybe I should read more threads. I'm glad this one turned up here.

I have been a member of Bimmerfest for over a year, right after I got my first BMW (2006 525i). I started reading the X3 pages 4 months ago, researching for my next car. It is an 2007 X3, 2 weeks old. Trust me when I say I have read everything good and bad on this truck and do not remember coming accross this issue.

Searching is a fun and resourceful tool, but as you can see from some of the answers, not everyone knew of this feature.

Vipz
