View Full Version : Purchasing a 2000 528i....any words of wisdom?

I'm looking at purchasing a 2000 528i with the manual transmission from a private party. The car is in good shape with about 25,000 miles on it. Since the car will not be a CPO vehicle with the extended BMW warranty, can anyone give me some info regarding reliability, durability of this particular model?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
I would check carfax.com first, and make sure the title and everything else about the car is clean.
I would also have an independent mechanic take a look at it, it usually costs about $75.00 and can even be deducted from the sale price since other buyers would probably want it done as well.
Things to look at specifically:
Scuffs on the rims
Condition of the exhaust
Heat blows hot air
AC blows cold air
All electronics function
Have a dealership read any fault codes in the computer
Then you can ge nitty gritty if you want and look at the pedals. Is part of one warn more then the other indicating a lazy driver who doesn't lift their foot off a pedal all the way but merely slides it. left side of the passenger seat warn out too much. inside the door sills relatively clean...
Anywho, this should get you rolling.
