Hello all!
My first post and I need some help as to whether I should buy a certified 2004 BMW 525i from a dealer. It has only 25k miles on it but it was produced in Nov03. I heard about potential electrical problems with 2004 BMW produced before April04 so based on the below, is this a cause for concern? Could someone let me know which is an issue to worry about and which is not an issue? I need to reply to the dealer by tomorrow so a quick response would be appreciated! The repair history is shown below...

That's a rather high amount of issues, IMO. Maybe the E60 owners will chime in and say it's normal, but I really think that's one you want to avoid.

Thanks AzNM...I was hoping that since it is a certified CPO car that everything was checked out and fixed. I was able to negotiate the price to $31k which to me seems pretty good since it is a certified car with only 25k miles on it. Anything in particular on the list of repairs that really is a concern? THanks again!

I think they're all minor. However from what I've seen with BMWs and reliability: they're either very reliable, or not at all. If there are lots of little electrical problems from Day One of the car, those problems will persist despite dealer attempts to fix them under warranty.

Ditto, seems like alot of minor problems for a 25k miles car. I would pass.

I think that the window issues are pretty common, and the RDS issue certainly is -- it's still not been resolved.

I don't notice anything that seems "systemic;" the issues seem to be with a few peripherals that have no impact on anything else in the vehicle.

Thanks all for replying...the issues I have the most question about are the following...

6577081500 Seat occupancy detection mat, front Permanent malfunction
I hear that this pertains to the detection and the subsequent releasing/unreleasing of the safety air bags...should this be a major concern?

6762011200 Drive unit, front window regulators Permanent failure
Based on the service history, this had to be repaired three times. Is this typical and should I expect the same issue in the future?

6113097900 OBD diagnosis socket incorrect connection /contact
What is this and should I be concerned? It does not sound like it is a big deal.

6135920200 E65 E66 Various electrical problems
What is this? Sounds very vague.

1153129600 Characteristic map thermostat, heating Fault code in diagnosis memory (warn. lamp on)
What is this? Is this just a warning light problem?

Also, I have no idea what the following is...
8599003700 SAMMELABRECHNUNG USA
6583912300 E60 US (with SA 6UA) BMW CCC conversion kit
Anyone any clue?

Thanks all for helping out!

supper64,

I just purchased an 04 545 with ~26K for slightly higher price granted it was from a non bmw dealer. I did the typical carfaxing nothing caming up (i'm still not sure how reliable that is). however before I bought it, I took it to a BMW dealer and asked them look over the car and pull the history. For about $150 they gave the car the same checks a bmw dealer would go through to certify a used cars. In the end you get the report with the car's history and any issues. None of the issue you mention came up. The only issue they found is a 'lose pillar' which made a squeaking noice in back. No big deal, Perillo BMW fixed it. I have to say, there seems to be a lot of folks out there disatified with BMW service...I hate to sound like a commercial, but Perillo in Chicago has been extremely good/helpful/compentent and most of all patient with me thru the years. Its' too bad they couldnt beat the deal I got on my 545.

anyway with the exception of all the F$***37;^ squeaks and ticking throughout the cabin I have not experienced major machanical issues.

For me it was my first used BMW and I was very cautious and worried about buying "someone's problems" Hope that helps you through your buying process.

Supper, whatever problems the 525 had it seems to be fixed by the BMW dealer...even after you buy your car you are going to inherit the full waranty. If you really like the car go for it!
