my wife just called and described on warning light on her 97 318i, a broken circle with a triangle in the middle and an exclamation point in the middle of of the triangle. the warning light is between the tach and speedometer. she stopped for fuel, cranked the car back and light was off.HELP

That warning light is for the ASC (traction control or) so it means the traction control has some kind of malfunction and so will NOT operate to prevent loss of control in the event the driver is....ahh "driving entheusiatically" to quote the BMW E30 owner's handbook.

So, for all normal A to B driving it wont have any implications at all, but obviously it needs to get checked out and repaired by yourself or a mechanic as soon as, in case it's ever needed (a bit like ABS, you probably only NEED ABS once or twice a year but then are sooo happy it works!)

The ASC, like the ABS, is tested each and every time the car is switched on/started up, so if the light has gone off now, it implies the problem is more likely to be a faulty electrical connection to one of the many sensors or parts of the system.
